Art-IE Federated Learning
Research into the model aggregation flow of a federated learning platform that lets SMEs train AI models together without sharing raw data.
The Art-IE Federated Learning Lab is a platform from the Fontys ICT Center of Expertise AI. It lets multiple parties, mainly small and medium-sized enterprises, train AI models together without sharing their raw data.
Our group's contribution was research into the platform's model aggregation flow:
- which model types can be aggregated
- when aggregation should happen
- the thresholds and costs involved
- which existing open-source frameworks could be used
Using a literature study and the stakeholders' requirements, we evaluated existing aggregation methods and frameworks against the platform's constraints, with a focus on practical, off-the-shelf solutions. Our advice was to build a custom knowledge-distillation service as the most viable approach.
